The Lunge Lodge on the Upper French River

August 19th - 25th. 2018 - In Memory of Richard Kassnel

Shown Above: Richard Kassnel.

This week at the Lodge we had very long time guests Matt Kassnel from Chagrin Falls Ohio, and his 27 year old son Cody who now lives in Washington, along with Matt's brother Mark, who now lives in Florida and their cousin Ken Stefan from Broadview Heights, Ohio.

This family has been coming to Lunge Lodge since 1959! Richard Kassnel, the father of Matt and Mark first came to Lunge Lodge back in 1959. Matt's first trip was in 1971. Mark's first trip was in 1983, and Ken's first trip was in 1977.

Shown Above: Richard again with his oldest son Terry in 1970.

These longtime guests of Lunge Lodge brought along with them a very special item this trip.
In May this year, Richard Kassnel passed away at the age of 78. Richards last trip here was in 2008. After 2008 his health kept him from returning to the place he loved so dearly. Richard made the trip to Lunge Lodge one more time this year in the form of ashes.
Matt, Cody, Mark, and Ken respectfully spread the ashes of Richard along the beautiful waters of the Upper French River. Somewhere along the waters of the little French, this family released their loved one's ashes at one of Richards favorite fishing spots here on the Upper French River. What a beautiful place to hold such a special event!
Matt and Cody fished hard all week. Matt reported catching his first musky this trip. although it was a small one, it was a musky never the less! And just like last year, on the last day, Cody hooked up with something BIG! But once again, after a short and fierce battle, the beast spit's out the hook and swims away! Last year on the last day Matt & Cody was fishing the famous triangle and BOOM!
Cody Had a Fish On! and the fight was on! After a vicious battle and a quick fight, the Beast snapped off his bait and swam away!! Next year Cody! You'll eventually get one and the reward will out way the all the ones that got away. Just remember, They are the top dog! the apex predator of these waters and they're not big because they're stupid!!
Shown Above: Cody, Matt, Ken, and Mark.
Ken and Mark had a great time as well. Ken reported catching bass and pike through out the week while Mark just can't seem to buy a fish! He reported throwing everything that he had but the tackle box at them but just couldn't seem to get anything to take his bait. It does happen! Getting skunked is a fact of fishing!
Most Lodge's would probably never report that but it happens! We've all been skunked before and we'll be skunked again! Like most people who fall in love with this place say " It's not about how many fish you catch here! It's all about just being here on the Upper French River and staying at Lunge Lodge!"
This family is a great family with a ton of history here and are already looking forward to next year here and many more to come.

Scott is correct, you can get skunked sometime but it doesn't happen very often. Of my 52 trips to Lunge since 1972, it has never happened. Even if it does, it would still be a great trip. Could be why it's called fishing trip and not catching trip.
